A vasectomy reversal is significantly more expensive than a vasectomy. Unlike a vasectomy which can be performed successfully by most urologists right in the office, and which takes only a fraction of an hour, a vasectomy reversal is a complex microsurgical procedure which requires more time and significantly more skill and specialization. The procedure is performed in an operating room with a general anesthetic administered by a board certified anesthesiologist. Dr Spitz's fee for performing the vasectomy reversal surgery is $4000. This fee is the same regardless of whether or not the more technically challenging epididymo-vasostomy is required or not. If patients desire sperm harvesting and freezing at the time of the procedure there is an additional small fee paid to the sperm bank, which processes and stores the sperm, but there is no additional fee charged by Dr. Spitz for the additional surgical procedure. There is an additional fee charged by the outpatient surgery center which is comprises of several costs including the costs of the micro sutures (which are very expensive) and the costs of the microsurgical equipment, supplies and staff, and the fees of the board certified anesthesiologist. This fee is actually higher than the surgeon's fee, at $5000, but reflects state of the art facilities and care. For those who request it, financing is available through professional medical financing agencies.
