For a wide range of reasons, many men each year choose to reverse their vasectomy. Reversible vasectomies are not new to the world of surgery; but, with modern techniques, a better understanding and surgeons who are specially trained in microsurgery, the success rates have steadily increased.

While it is perceived that the best chance of a successful vasectomy reverse depends on how much time has passed since the original vasectomy, in truth, there are a number of things that can impact success rates. Some of these factors include:

  • The overall health and fertility of the patient
  • The location of the original surgery
  • Additional blockages of the vas deferens
  • The degree of congestion in the epididymis

But, even though there are a number of potential challenges, highly trained surgeons are capable of maximizing results on the majority of patients.

Vasectomy Reversible Statistics

  • A vasectomy reverse results in pregnancy rates of greater than 50 percent
  • Sperm returns to the seminal fluid in 75 to 97 percent of patients
  • Of men who have a vasectomy, between 6 and 12 percent choose to have it reversed
  • Pregnancy can occur as soon as one month after a vasectomy reversible procedure but on average occur by one year

Vasectomy Reversible Risks

A vasectomy reversible, or a vasovasostomy, is a microsurgery and as with all surgeries, there are risks involved. While rare, here are some of the risks that are involved with reversing a vasectomy.

  • Bleeding within the scrotum
  • A build-up of clear fluid in the scrotum that will require draining
  • Surgery site infection and inflammation
  • Pain

Some of the signs that you may be experiencing a problem include:

  • Fever
  • Swelling at the site that won't go down
  • Continuous bleeding from the incision site
  • Excessive or persisting pain

Vasectomy Reversible Considerations

Before your surgeon performs your vasectomy reversible, there are a few things he or she will need to know about you and your partner.

  • Were you fertile before your vasectomy?
  • Does your partner have any fertility problems?
  • Does your partner experience regular menstrual cycles?
  • Do you or your partner smoke or drink alcohol excessively?
  • What is the current state of you and your partner's health?

In some cases, the surgeon may want to perform a series of tests to ensure that both you and your partner are healthy enough to get pregnant should the vasectomy reversible procedure be a success. These tests may include measurements of blood hormone levels which can be an indicator of how well the testicles are working to produce sperm. In rare cases, a testicular biopsy may be recommended to ensure that healthy sperm are being produced. Your partner may be advised to see her gynecologist for a pelvic exam and additional tests to ensure that the fallopian tubes are not blocked and that she is producing healthy eggs.
